PRE-KINDERGARTEN: BUILDING THE FOUNDATION

Beginning literacy instruction often starts with letters, sounds, and words, which for many young children is not necessarily what they are ready for when it comes to their beginning reading and writing instruction. Because early learning has its roots in oral language development, gross and fine motor control, and attention to visual detail, teaching and learning around these foundational areas is critical to every young child's preschool experience. The more teachers understand the importance of these developmental areas, the stronger foundation students will have and the more success they will experience in later reading and writing instruction. Prekindergarten: Building the Foundation provides teachers with insight into these developmental areas through examples of teaching, understanding simple instructional tools, and developing classroom structures that produce children who feel like readers and writers right from the start of their educational experience.
