FIRST AND SECOND GRADE: DEVELOPING THE WRITER

First and second grade play a critically important role in a child's literacy development. While the focus of prekindergarten and kindergarten is on foundational skills such as oral language, fine motor development, sound/letter connections, and basic sight word recognition, the overall focus for first and second grade is on extending skills through the building of strategies- how words work, how sentences work, and how text forms work. With that in mind, it is essential that first and second students have lots of experiences in these literacy areas so they can construct (and deconstruct) well-developed narrative and expository pieces. Our Latest book, First and Second Grades: Developing the Writer, is designed to help teachers develop strategic writers through a workshop structure that not only incorporates skills and other instructional/content areas but does so with a continuum in mind.
