Writing has become a popular component of many state tests, and as a result, an important aspect of instruction in today's schools. But writing on today's tests usually takes two forms' composing text and responding to text. The Reading Response Journal focuses on developing understandings of the least understood aspect of writing responding to text or reading constructed response. Having students respond to questions about their reading, orally or in writing, require that students have an understanding of narrative or expository elements. Understanding the HOW and WHY behind a story, not only helps students talk or write about what they read, but enhances the student's ability to understand what the author did to convey their message. The Reading Response Journal is a comprehension tool for teachers to gain insight into a student's understanding of a story and to move their thinking deeper.
